Beginning with a Bang

After traveling ~3,500 miles for the last several weeks between Michigan and Arizona it is great to settle in for the next several months at Smith Point again.  Smith Point is so amazing for a variety of bird species, especially for the raptors.  Living up to its reputation, today started off great for it being August 1st.  While the overall number of raptors was an expected low total for the day, the diversity of 9 raptors was pretty remarkable.

Today’s Count-9:

White-tailed Kite-1

Broad-winged Hawk-6

Swainson’s Hawk-1

Red-tailed Hawk-1

Additional raptors seen:

Black Vulture-6

Turkey Vulture-8

Cooper’s Hawk-1

Red-shouldered Hawk-2

Crested Caracara-1

This Red-tailed Hawk was the most surprising bird seen today as Red-taileds are usually a later migrant at Smith Point.  Thirteen American White Pelicans seemed on the early side as well.  Otherwise it was a pretty normal early August day at Smith Point with 57 species seen from the tower during the count.  Of course, normal at Smith Point is pretty awesome with 6 species of terns, 35 White Ibis, 17 Tricolored Herons, 17 Magnificent Frigatebirds,  2 Anhinga, 1 Solitary Sandpiper, and over 250 swallows some of the neat things seen today.

4 Common Nighthawks were seen from the tower today but this one was just down the road

It was a great opening day and thanks to Marvin for his help spotting birds today.  I look forward to seeing everyone over the course of the season and enjoying this gem of a place with you.
