Smith Point Hawkwatch report for Sept 4

Smith Point Hawkwatch report for Sept 4. Cumulo-nimbus kind of day. Showers around all day but only briefly at the tower. Winds from the east first 3 hours then from the south. Not many birds but some choice ones. 1 non-adult male Rufous/Allen’s Hummingbird briefly at feeders. Bob

3 Cooper’s Hawks
1 Red-shouldered Hawk
1 Broad-winged Hawk
1 Merlin
1 Peregrine
5 Swallow-tailed Kites

  1. This is Dan Reilly from National Weather Service. Were seeing returns emanating from Smith Point and crossing the Bay to near San Leon this evening (7 pm or so). Do you all have any eyes on what is going on? I’m thinking could be birds. Do they migrate that way?

    • Dan – we don’t track passerine movements at Smith Point but yes it is a major site for passerine migration in fall so the returns you are seeing are very likely birds.
